Planning a trip to Vietnam but only have 7 days? Let me tell you something before we start — Vietnam is much bigger than it looks on the map. 😂

I spent time travelling through Hanoi, Sapa, Fansipan, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Trang An, Lying Dragon Mountain, Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills, and honestly, trying to fit all of that into one week would be exhausting.

So instead of pretending you can see all of Vietnam in seven days, I’ve put together two different Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary options.

One starts in Hanoi, taking you through Northern Vietnam, while the other starts in Ho Chi Minh City and works its way north through Da Nang.

Pick the one that fits your travel style — and if you have more than seven days, even better.

🇻🇳 Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary at a Glance

One important thing: I wouldn’t try to combine every destination I visited into seven days. Vietnam stretches a long way from north to south, and adding too many stops means spending a lot of your holiday travelling between them. Other recent itinerary guides make the same point: a week works much better when you limit the number of regions you cover.

Route 1: Northern Vietnam in 7 Days

Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Sapa → Fansipan

This is the route I’d choose if you’re more interested in mountains, landscapes, culture and nature than big cities.

You get Hanoi, the limestone landscapes around Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and the mountains of Sapa.

Day 1 — Hanoi

Start your trip in Hanoi.

Spend the day exploring the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the surrounding streets. Don’t try to tick off every attraction on your first day. Just walk around, eat some Vietnamese food and get a feel for the city.

Hanoi is one of those places where wandering around can be just as interesting as following a checklist.

Overnight: Hanoi

Day 2 — Ninh Binh: Trang An + Lying Dragon Mountain

For Day 2, take a day trip to Ninh Binh.

This was one of the places I visited in Vietnam, and it’s completely different from Hanoi.

Start with a boat ride through Trang An, where you’ll pass through limestone karsts, rivers and caves. Then head towards Lying Dragon Mountain, also known as Ngoa Long Mountain, near Hang Mua.

The climb involves several hundred stone steps, but the views over the Tam Coc landscape make the effort worthwhile. Lying Dragon Mountain sits within the wider Trang An–Tam Coc landscape, making it easy to combine these experiences in one day.

If you’re not a fan of climbing, you can simply spend more time around Trang An instead.

Return to Hanoi in the evening.

Overnight: Hanoi

Day 3 — Ha Long Bay

Leave Hanoi early and head towards Ha Long Bay.

If your schedule allows, I’d choose an overnight cruise rather than trying to squeeze Ha Long Bay into a few hours. You’ll get more time among the limestone islands and won’t spend the entire day worrying about getting back to Hanoi.

Ha Long Bay is one of those places where the journey itself is part of the experience.

Overnight: Ha Long Bay cruise

Day 4 — Ha Long Bay → Hanoi → Sapa

Enjoy the morning around Ha Long Bay before returning towards Hanoi.

From Hanoi, continue towards Sapa.

This is going to be a long travel day, so don’t fill your evening with activities. Check into your accommodation, have dinner and rest.

Overnight: Sapa

Day 5 — Sapa + Fansipan

Now it’s time for the mountains.

Spend the day exploring Sapa and head up Fansipan, the highest mountain in Vietnam.

Fansipan was one of the places I visited, and this is where the scenery changes completely from the busy streets of Hanoi. The mountains, clouds and cooler atmosphere make Sapa feel like a different part of the country.

If the weather isn’t good, don’t force the mountain experience. Clouds can completely change what you see from the top.

Vietnam’s official tourism site also highlights Fansipan as one of the key experiences around Sapa.

Overnight: Sapa

Day 6 — Sapa → Hanoi

Have a relaxed morning in Sapa before travelling back to Hanoi.

Depending on your departure time, you can spend your final evening eating, shopping or simply walking around the city.

After several busy days, don’t underestimate the value of doing absolutely nothing for a few hours. 😂

Overnight: Hanoi

Day 7 — Hanoi + Departure

Use your final morning for anything you missed in Hanoi.

Then head to the airport for your flight home.

This route gives you:

• Hanoi
• Ninh Binh
• Trang An
• Lying Dragon Mountain
• Ha Long Bay
• Sapa
• Fansipan

That’s a very full week, but it focuses on one part of Vietnam rather than trying to cross the entire country.

Route 2: Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi in 7 Days

Ho Chi Minh City → Da Nang → Hanoi

If you want to experience different sides of Vietnam, this route gives you a taste of the south, centre and north.

You will need domestic flights for this route, so I would book them in advance and avoid wasting half a day travelling overland.

Day 1 — Ho Chi Minh City

Start your Vietnam trip in Ho Chi Minh City.

Spend the day exploring the city, walking around the central areas, checking out the markets and trying some local food.

If you’re interested in Vietnam’s modern history, make time for the city’s major historical attractions.

Don’t try to do a Mekong Delta trip on this day. You only have seven days, and there is already enough to see.

Overnight: Ho Chi Minh City

Day 2 — Ho Chi Minh City

Use your second day to explore more of Ho Chi Minh City.

You could visit the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace and other central sights, then spend the evening exploring the city’s food and nightlife.

The official tourism site also has a number of suggested experiences around Ho Chi Minh City, from historical attractions to food and nightlife.

Overnight: Ho Chi Minh City

Day 3 — Fly to Da Nang

Take a morning flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang.

Once you arrive, explore Da Nang and spend some time around the beach or Han River.

If you still have energy, head to the Marble Mountains.

I visited the Marble Mountains, and they’re a great addition to a Da Nang trip because you’re getting something completely different from the modern city and coastline.

The mountains contain caves, temples and viewpoints, and they’re only a short distance from central Da Nang.

Overnight: Da Nang

Day 4 — Ba Na Hills

Spend Day 4 at Ba Na Hills.

This is where you’ll find the famous Golden Bridge, along with the mountain resort, gardens and other attractions.

I visited Ba Na Hills during my Vietnam trip, and it’s one of those places where you can easily spend most of the day.

Don’t try to combine Ba Na Hills with too many other major attractions. The journey and cable car experience already take a good chunk of the day.

Overnight: Da Nang

Day 5 — Fly to Hanoi

Take a morning flight from Da Nang to Hanoi.

Once you arrive, spend the rest of the day exploring Hanoi.

This is another reason I wouldn’t try to add Sapa or Ha Long Bay to this particular seven-day route. You technically can do it, but you’ll spend too much time moving around.

Overnight: Hanoi

Day 6 — Hanoi

Give yourself a full day to experience Hanoi.

Walk around the Old Quarter, visit Hoan Kiem Lake, try local food and explore some of the city’s cultural attractions.

If you’re someone who likes photography, this is a good day to simply walk without a strict itinerary.

Sometimes the random street you turn into ends up being the photograph you actually wanted.

Overnight: Hanoi

Day 7 — Hanoi + Departure

Depending on your flight time, spend your final morning exploring anything you missed.

Then head to the airport and fly home.

This route gives you:

• Ho Chi Minh City
• Da Nang
• Marble Mountains
• Ba Na Hills
• Hanoi

It doesn’t cover everything I personally visited, but that’s exactly the point.

Seven days is not enough for the whole country.

What About Sapa, Fansipan, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh?

This is where itinerary planning gets tricky.

You might look at a map and think:

“They’re all in northern Vietnam. Why can’t I just add them?”

You technically can.

But Sapa, Fansipan, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay each deserve time, and travelling between them takes longer than simply looking at the distance on Google Maps.

That’s why I prefer the first route if you want a nature-heavy Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary.

You get a much better balance without jumping between north, central and south Vietnam.

Recent one-week itineraries also tend to group Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and Sapa together rather than trying to combine every major region.

Can You See Everything I Visited in 7 Days?

Honestly?

No. 😂

During my Vietnam travels, I visited:

• Hanoi
• Sapa
• Fansipan
• Ha Long Bay
• Da Nang
• Ho Chi Minh City
• Trang An
• Lying Dragon Mountain
• Marble Mountains
• Ba Na Hills

Trying to put all of these into seven days would turn your holiday into a race between airports, buses and hotels.

And that’s not really how I like to travel.

If you have 10–14 days, you can start combining the northern, central and southern parts of the country much more comfortably. A week is better treated as a chance to experience a couple of regions properly rather than trying to collect every destination.

Which Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary Should You Choose?

Choose the Hanoi route if you want:

• Mountains
• Nature
• Ha Long Bay
• Sapa
• Fansipan
• Ninh Binh
• More outdoor experiences

Choose the Ho Chi Minh City route if you want:

• Big-city experiences
• History
• Beaches
• Da Nang
• Marble Mountains
• Ba Na Hills
• A taste of both northern and southern Vietnam

Personally, if this were my first 7-day Vietnam trip, I’d rather choose one of these routes properly than try to squeeze every famous place into the same week.

Because at the end of the day, you are coming to Vietnam to enjoy the country, not to prove that you can survive seven days of travelling. 😂

Final Thoughts

Vietnam has an incredible amount to offer, and my own trip showed me just how different each part of the country can feel.

From the mountains of Sapa and Fansipan to the limestone landscapes of Trang An and Ha Long Bay, and from the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches and mountains around Da Nang, there is a lot to explore.

But you don’t need to see everything in one trip.

Use this Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary as a starting point, choose the route that suits you, leave yourself some breathing room, and enjoy the journey.

Because honestly, that’s the whole point. 🇻🇳❤️
