There are some places you remember because of the things you did there. And then there are places you remember because of how they felt.
For me, Krabi has a little bit of both.
I remember the beaches, the boats, the islands and the roads I travelled through. But when I look back at my photographs, I keep coming back to the sunsets.
And the funny thing is, they weren’t all the perfect beach sunsets you normally see in travel photographs.
Some happened while I was simply travelling along a road. Some were filled with huge clouds. Some were over the sea, with a longtail boat sitting quietly in the middle of the water. And some were just those few minutes when the whole sky suddenly changed colour before disappearing into darkness.
I didn’t go looking for a sunset every single day.
Sometimes, I just happened to be in the right place.
So this isn’t a guide to the best sunset spots in Krabi. There are plenty of those already.
This is simply a collection of the sunsets I remember from Krabi — the colors, the clouds, the roads, the sea, and those little moments when I stopped whatever I was doing just to look up.
Sometimes, You Don’t Need a Beach
When we think about sunsets in Thailand, most of us probably imagine a beach.
Sand under your feet. Palm trees. The sea in front of you. The sun slowly disappearing over the horizon.
But some of my favourite sunset photographs from Krabi don’t look like that at all.
I remember seeing the sky changing while travelling around.
The roads were still busy. Cars were moving. Street lights were coming on. There were buildings, electricity poles and wires everywhere.
Nothing about the place looked particularly special.
And then you look up.
Suddenly, the entire sky is glowing.
The clouds were catching the last bit of sunlight, turning everything above the road orange and gold.
I think these are the kind of moments that make travelling interesting for me.
You don’t always need to find a famous viewpoint.
Sometimes you just need to notice what’s happening around you.
Krabi Has Some Serious Clouds
One thing I remember about the sunsets in Krabi is how dramatic the clouds could become.
There were evenings when the sun itself almost disappeared behind them.
Instead of a clear orange sky, you would get layers of dark clouds with bright golden light breaking through underneath.
And the colours kept changing.
One minute the sky looked orange.
Then it became almost golden.
A few minutes later, most of the light was gone.
I always find these sunsets more interesting than the completely clear ones.
There is something about watching the sunlight fight its way through the clouds.
You don’t know what the sky is going to look like five minutes later.
So you keep watching.
And, of course, you take another photograph.
And Then There Was the Sea
This is probably the image most people expect when they hear the words Krabi sunset.
The sea.
The islands in the distance.
And a traditional longtail boat sitting quietly on the water.
As the sun started going down, the mountains and islands slowly became silhouettes.
The water picked up the colour of the sky, and the whole scene became much quieter.
There was no need to do anything.
No sightseeing.
No rushing to the next place.
Just sitting there and watching the evening change.
I think these are the moments that sometimes get lost when we travel with a packed itinerary.
We spend so much time thinking about where to go next that we forget to enjoy where we already are.
The Sun Didn’t Always Make It to the Horizon
Some evenings were completely different.
The sun would be there, but the clouds would take over the show.
There is something beautiful about watching the sunlight reflect across the water.
Even when the actual sunset lasts only a few minutes, the light can completely change the landscape.
The sea becomes golden.
The distant mountains turn dark.
And for a short while, everything seems to have the same colour.
I probably stood there longer than I needed to.
But that’s the whole point, isn’t it?
Some Sunsets Are Just Ordinary Moments
This is probably my favourite part about these photographs.
Not every picture looks like a postcard.
Some have roads.
Some have electricity poles.
Some have buildings.
Some have traffic.
And I actually like that.
Because that’s what travelling really looks like.
You don’t spend your entire trip standing on a beautiful viewpoint with nobody around.
Sometimes you’re walking down a normal street.
Sometimes you’re sitting in a vehicle.
Sometimes you’re heading somewhere else entirely.
And then the sky suddenly gives you a reason to stop.
Those moments aren’t necessarily planned.
You just have to notice them.
I Think That’s Why I Like Photographing Sunsets
I’ve photographed plenty of beautiful places during my travels.
Mountains, temples, beaches, cities and everything in between.
But sunsets are different.
You can’t really schedule the perfect one.
You can choose where you want to be, but after that, the sky decides what happens.
Maybe you’ll get clear skies.
Maybe you’ll get clouds.
Maybe you’ll get rain.
Maybe you’ll get five minutes of incredible light and then it’s gone.
And that’s what makes it special.
Looking back at these photographs now, I don’t remember exactly what I was doing before every single one.
But I remember stopping.
I remember looking up.
And I remember thinking, “I need to take a picture of this.”
Until the Next Sunset
Krabi gave me plenty of things to remember.
But when I scroll through my photographs, these simple moments keep coming back.
A road glowing under an orange sky.
Huge clouds catching the last light of the day.
A longtail boat sitting quietly on the sea.
And those few minutes when the entire world seemed to turn gold.
Maybe that’s what I like most about sunsets when I travel.
They don’t care whether you’re visiting a famous attraction or standing on an ordinary road.
You don’t need a plan.
You don’t need a ticket.
You just need to look up.
And sometimes, that’s enough.
